Oahu’s modernist architecture was not limited to commercial and residential developments in the 1950s and 60s, in fact, some of the island’s most inspired mid-century designs could be – and fortunately still can  be – found in its memorial parks.

Like the Valley of the Temples, also situated on Oahu’s windward (eastern) side, the modernist structures at the Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery were designed by George ‘Pete’ Wimberly (along with then partner Howard Cook) and are the epitome of respectful modernist elegance set amidst the final resting place of many island residents.

Opened in 1958, you’ll discover sublime folded plate roof lines supported by strong yet graceful pillars, tropical island-style breezeblocks and floor to ceiling glass revealing breathtaking views of the Ko’olau mountains  at this peaceful and contemplative one-of-a-kind location.
