A Sneak Peek at Palm Springs Modernism Week, February 15-25

By Ken MacIntyre

(December 1, 2023) As anticipation builds for Modernism Week’s 19th annual gathering in the desert this coming February, the event is gearing up to showcase an array of unique modernist homes. In addition to the eagerly awaited Modernism Show, neighborhood tours, design seminars, film screenings, cocktail parties and more, there are several “Home Tours” on the schedule which look to delight modernism enthusiasts and aficionados alike.

One “Featured Home Tour” standout will be “The Shag House,” imagined by the artist Shag (see photo above). This late ‘50s Palmer & Krisel home in the Little Beverly Hills neighborhood is like stepping into a life-size Shag painting. His reimagining preserves the original layout while infusing new life into the front façade and converting the breezeway into a stylish lounge. This immersive experience happens Febrary 16-19 and 23-25.

Another must see is the “Wexler ’54 Featured Home Tour”. Nestled in the Deepwell Estates neighborhood, this Wexler-Harrison home stands as a great example of post and beam residential design. Recently renovated and historically designated, the homeowners collaborated with architect Susan Secoy Jensen to ensure thoughtful preservation. Tours run from February 16-19 and 23-25.

In a nod to preservation, Modernism Week will be kicking off their new Restoration Series with the Sutter House on February 18. Designed by E. Stewart Williams in 1958, this desert modernist masterpiece has been carefully restored and furnished, paying homage to its historic significance.

The program also includes exciting new additions like the Home Tour of “That Pink Door House” offering a rare peek behind the famous pink doors of the Hollywood-Regency style residence designed by James McNaughton. Additionlly, the Art+Architecture Home Tour on February 16 unveils a 1967 masterpiece also designed by McNaughton and showcasing not only architectural excellence but also an impressive art and design collection not to be missed.

The ever-popular Signature Home Tours are adding to their allure by singling out two separate homes and featuring the work of architect Mark W. Daniels on Monday, February 19 and on Friday, February 24 showcasing Lance O’Donnell and the interior design team of Capurro + Davis Design. These exclusive glimpses into contemporary modernism are also featured on the Signature home tours.
