With the shuttering or bulldozing of iconic restaurants and diners over the years, like Don the Beachcomber, Huddle’s Springs and the Town & Country Restaurant, only a handful of true “vintage” Palm Springs eateries remain. Our picks are listed in no particular order … just click on addresses below for Google map locations.

Keedy’s Fountain & Grill (73633 CA-111, Palm Desert) – Not actually situated in Palm Springs, we’ll gladly take the 30 minute drive to Palm Desert though just to experience Keedy’s friendly service and genuine frosted malts, cheeseburgers and overall diner atmosphere. Still going strong in the same location for over 60 years, Keedy’s boasts the original formica tables, counters, stools and fountain it had upon opening back in 1957. So what if its exterior had an unfortunate Sante Fe remodel? It’s the mid-century interior that counts and Keedy’s still serves it up right!

Sherman’s Deli & Bakery (401 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way) – A staple in the Coachella Valley since 1963 when Sherman Harris opened his first New York-style Deli in downtown Palm Springs (where the likes of Frank Sinatra, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Bob Hope would frequent), this busy restaurant may not be the original but it still serves up large Kosher portions, friendly service and is owned & operated by the Harris family. It’s been said Sherman Harris originated the “early bird dinner” in the 1950s, and the Palm Springs Walk of Stars commemorated his contributions to the community in 1999 with a Golden Palm Star on Palm Canyon Blvd. Watch the Palm Springs Life video below for more information on Sherman’s Deli.
