Mid-century modern buildings
The Pawa’a neighborhood was one of Honolulu’s most modernized districts back in the 1960s and although one could easily spend hours taking in the entire area’s Tropical Modernist offerings we like Amana Street and its immediate vicinity as a great place to start.

Walking South down Amana Street from the Pagoda Floating Restaurant & Hotel, you’ll see a number of late 1960s modernist buildings including the The Woodrose (1967) and Holiday Village (1967) residential towers to your right, with the Princess Leilani tower (1970) and a pair of low rise office buildings to your left at 771 and 765 Amana Street. Further down you’ll see the Pacific Grand apartments (1968) and at the corner of Amana and Kanunu Streets is the sleek and gorgeous Coty Tower (1968).
One block East of Amana, at Kaheka and Makaloa Streets is the modernist Honolulu Fire Department Station No.2 and walking north up Kaheka Street you’ll find the Hawaiian Public Radio building, the Kapiolani Bel Aire tower (1969) and the awesome Saints Peter & Paul modernist Catholic Church (1969).
