Hotel Lautner

Mid-century/desert modern buildings

Although not located in Palm Springs proper, we have to give a shout out to the Hotel Lautner; a mid-century modern enthusiast’s dream accommodation situated in the middle of the desert. Desert Hot Springs to be exact.

Designed by renowned modernist architect John Lautner (the Elrod House, the Bob Hope House) in 1947 as part of a master planned community of over 100 buildings, this iconic 4 room prototype (boasting some nice pre-Googie stylings) gradually fell into disuse after the failed project came to a halt.

The property – which had been used as a motel and apartments over the years – was purchased by its current owners in 2008 who re-imagined it as a boutique hotel & vacation rental hybrid and spent years on its meticulous restoration.

The new Hotel Lautner opened in 2012 to great acclaim and has since become the perfect, private, hideaway for modernists wanting to leave everything else behind.

Private tours of the property can be given, subject to availability. Click here for more details.
