Palm Springs Walk of Stars

Mid-century modern architects

Taking a page from Hollywood’s playbook – and its Walk of Fame –  in 1992 the city of Palm Springs began honoring those whose contributions and presence in the area contributed to the charm, worldwide prominence and name recognition of the city.

Since then, nearly 400 Golden Palm Stars have been embedded in the sidewalks along Palm Canyon Drive, Taqhuitz Canyon Way and Museum Drive, helping to pay tribute, promote the city, and educate the community about its past.

Show business folk share sidewalk space with community leaders, civic personalities, humanitarians and … architects! That’s right, beginning in 2007 and almost every year since, a notable mid-century modern architect has been celebrated by the Palm Springs Walk of Stars for their unique contributions to the area.

Modernist architects honored (so far) include E. Stewart Williams, Donald Wexler, Richard Harrison, William Krisel, Albert Frey, William Cody, A. Quincy Jones, Hugh Kaptur and Richard Neutra. Prolific mid-century modern photographer, Julius Shulman, was also honored in 2006.

Their Golden Palm Stars can be found in front of the Architecture & Design Center, on the 300 block of S. Palm Canyon Drive.
