Tiki Culture/Polynesian Pop
For modernists who like to mix a little Polynesian Pop with their desert getaways, Palm Springs has a few Tiki bars that won’t disappoint. Even though they aren’t from the mid-century each boasts enough vintage flair – not to mention potent, colorful cocktails – that it won’t matter what decade you’re in by the end of the evening.
Bootlegger Tiki (1101 N. Palm Canyon Drive) – Situated in the Uptown Design District in the same spot where Don the Beachcomber’s restaurant & bar was located back in the 1950s, Bootlegger Tiki is a cozy hangout (three booths and a bar!) to get your Mai Tai on, and although this spot has only been open since 2014, their happy hour prices and retro island decor should be enough to transport you back even further in time. Oh, and their hand-crafted cocktails are pretty good too!
The Tonga Hut (254 N. Palm Canyon Drive) – Filled with period decor and Tiki memorabilia – located upstairs, across the street from The Hyatt hotel – The Tonga Hut’s L.A. location was established in 1958, giving this newer locale immediate street cred. In addition to their delicious Hawaiian-style cocktails, they also offer Pu-Pu platters and a full menu to enjoy in their cozy Polynesian-themed dining room, bar, lounge or outdoor patio. There’s even a secret Tiki Room accessible through the telephone booth in the back… really!
The Reef (411 E Palm Canyon Drive) – Located adjacent to the Twin Palms neighborhood at the Caliente Tropics hotel where the Conga Room restaurant used to be back in the swinging ‘60s, The Reef’s menu boasts tiki bar favorites like Three Dots and a Dash as well as Island-style Loco Moco and more, while their large outdoor patio next to the hotel’s sparkling pool may evoke thoughts of a tropical South Seas vacation … even though you’re in the desert!
