Sunnylands

Mid-century/desert modern homes

Not technically in Palm Springs, but two towns over in Rancho Mirage, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the former Annenberg Estate; a 200 acre property which was owned by Walter and Leonore Annenberg and served as the couple’s winter retreat – as well as a gathering place for celebrities and politicians – since 1966.

Renowned modernist architect A. Quincy Jones designed the 25,000 sq. ft. mid-century modern home for the media mogul/philanthropist and his wife, in 1963. The expansive property features multiple guest cottages, a private 9 hole golf course, and a very distinctive pink roof on the main house.

Frequently welcoming U.S. Presidents – seven during the Annenberg’s lifetime – Sunnylands soon earned the moniker “Camp David of the West” and continues to serve as a retreat for world leaders (hosting President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping, in 2013).

In 2012 the Sunnylands Visitors Center and Gardens, designed by Frederick Fisher, opened its doors and is free to the public.

For tours of the unique home and its scenic grounds you must pre-register in advance on the Sunnylands website.
